Winter weather is back and a perfect time for soup. Here is a recipe I found that uses kale and Italian sausage. It comes from Tammilee Tips.

CROCK POT ITALIAN SAUSAGE WEDDING SOUP RECIPE

INGREDIENTS

1 tbsp olive oil
1 lb ground Italian Sausage
1 red onion, diced
2 carrots, sliced
6 cups chicken stock/broth
4 packed cups kale, chopped
1 tsp lemon juice
2 tsp minced garlic
1 bay leaf
¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes
½ cup small pasta
salt and pepper to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Place olive oil in a skillet over medium heat, add in ground sausage and cook until browned. Drain off excess fat, return to heat and add in onions and carrots, cook until onions sweat
  2. Transfer meat and veggies to the crock pot. Add in chicken broth, kale, lemon juice, garlic, bay leaf, crushed red peppers and stir to combine
  3. Cook on low for 5 hours, add in pasta and cook for 1 additional hour
  4. Season to taste with salt and pepper, serve with Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top

Time to Order Local Food - New Products and a Ginger Update

Stones River Market

Market News

The Market is back open this morning with plenty of locally grown and made products. Apple season will be ending soon but at this time Rainbow Hill Farm still has several varieties available. Get your supply before they are gone.

If you came to Market last week, Rod with Double Star Bar Farms brought samples of his focaccia and pain a l’ancienne. This week he has added an herb oil focaccia, a fruited focaccia (Wow, is this a great breakfast item!) and a “plain” focaccia (just olive oil and sea salt as a topping). He has also added an olive loaf (large and small). Finally, he has the mini baguettes (pain a l’ancienne) listed.

Rocky Glade Farm sends us this note:

… all of the ginger has been dug, so this truly is the last week for it and galangal. We are offering a larger 3 lb bulk pack for 20.00 which is quite a savings over the regular price. Ginger freezes well for use during cold and flu season or to freeze in quantities to add to smoothies or juicing.

Linda with Dogwood Valley Greenhouse sends this message:

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse is offering a fabric-lined basket filled with three herb plants of your choice, each in its own 4" pot. These pretty baskets will make great Thanksgiving decorations or hostess gifts. Order your basket for delivery now, or preorder for Thanksgiving delivery. Herbs included will be those commonly used in baking and cooking, a great addition to any kitchen. Specify your preference of herbs from this list: lemon balm; orange, pineapple, apple, chocolate, spearmint, or grapefruit mint; Greek or variegated oregano; silver-edged, English, common, variegated lemon, citrus, or lime thyme. Basket #1 is approximately 8-9" round with a handle, but may be different from the picture on the market. Pattern of fabric may vary, but will be fall/Thanksgiving themed.

From Sean with Nuance Coffee and Tea:

Nuance Coffee & Tea has adding several new teas to our offerings. We will be adding even more in the next two weeks. Look For the word NEW, in the description of the tea, to see what we have recently added for the Fall and Winter seasons. Also, due to customer demand, we have changed the size of all teas, from a 4 oz. bag, to a 2 oz. bag. This allows our customers to chose more than one tea, at a time, while still keeping our prices as low as possible. This is great if you want to give multiple teas, as gifts, or just try a variety of the different teas we offer. All prices have been leveled at $5.00 / 2 oz. pouch which is the best value that you will find anywhere. Thank you and, as always, “Enjoy”!

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Market News

Did everyone remember to turn back their clocks last night with the end of daylight savings? The Market is back open this morning with a good supply of locally grown and made products.

I have an important note about the Market. As we have grown so has the expenses for the Market. Beginning today, November 1, the market surcharge will increase by 3%. I am always working to improve the Market for customers and farmers and this increase should help with that.

Notes and products about the Market this week:

Erdmann Farm will be taking a two week break but will return with plenty of kale and arugula as well as some new items – broccoli and cabbage.

Farrar Farms contintues to add their listing. This week it is beef short ribs.

Flying S Farm brings a greens mixture to the Market – Ka Co Tu Mus – which is mixture of kale, collards, turnip and mustard greens.

Rainbow Hill Farm has eight varieties of apples available including Arkansas Black, Fuji and Pink Lady. They also have bulk size apples for making applesauce if you want to preserve them for winter.

Rocky Glade Farm has an abundance of sweet potatoes so has list bushel size quantities. This is also the last week for galangal and their ginger is almost gone.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching. There is still time to reserve a fresh turkey from West Wind Farms.

There are plenty of other products available this week. Browse the categories to see what your will find.

Thanks so much for your support of Stones River Market, all of our growers, local food, and our rights to eat it. We’ll see you on Wednesday at Southern Stained Glass at 310 West Main Street from 5:00 to 6: 30 pm!
