Market is OPEN, Winter Squash is IN

The Market is OPEN www.stonesriver.locallygrown.net

Good Morning everyone and especially new customers that have recently joined the market. Please spread the news about The Stones River Online Market on your social medium sites and tell your friends, family and neighbors. As a reminder we are still in our “10 Year Anniversary” celebration, this is week 5 or the 10 weeks! When you order each week your name is added to “The Basket” for a chance to win a $25 or $10 Gift Certificates to the market. We drawing we be September 26, you will be notified if you are a ‘winner’.

Several Winter Squash varieties have been added to the market this week. The term winter squash is a bit of a misnomer: Harvested in the fall, these hardy vegetables will keep well through the cold winter months for which they’re named. There are many, vividly colored, flavorful and nutrient-packed winter squash varieties, they are sweeter, denser, and more firm in texture than summer squash or zucchini, autumn and winter squash take well to a wide spectrum of seasonings and can be true crowd-pleasers in warming soups, casseroles, risotto, lasagna, and even desserts.

Many have noticed Double Star Bar Farms has not been on the market for a couple weeks, SAD to report they will no longer be with the market but HAPPY to report they will be starting a new chapter of their lives moving to California. They have been truly a great asset to the market over the past 10 years and will be greatly missed. We wish them the best.

Looking forward seeing you on “The Porch” of Quinn’s Mercantile.

Market is OPEN with a new grower

Is it really August? Temperatures are fall like and getting more comfortable, schools are starting and FOOTBALL SEASON is about to begin…that means grilling and getting things that will make your gathering great. The Market will have you covered with what you might need to make whatever you plan special. All our meat vendors have the freshest and healthy meats available in my opinion. Beef, Pork, Poultry be sure to check them out.

Summer produce is still available and fall produce is arriving slowly. Melons, Apples, Breads and Sweet treats are always a hit any any event.

That being said we have a NEW GROWER, excited to have 6R Farm from Woodbury join our market. Offering Vegetables, pies and cookies! Casey will be at market pickup with few things and you can meet him and learn more about their farm.

Soloman’s Greenhouse has returned and has mushrooms available.

Flying S Farms still has tomatoes available, adding Bodacious corn; a delicious yellow sweet corn will be great on the grill.

Rainbow Hill Farm has Apples; Gingergold, it is the first apple of the season; green to yellow, sweet and tart, crisp and juicy. Several vegetables also.

I’ve only mentioned a few of our Grower/Vendors but several othes have some great things too. Goats Milk, Herbs and Plants, Fermented foods and drinks. Many things to available.

Looking forward seeing you on “The Porch” of Quinn’s Mercantile.

Good August Morning...Market is OPEN!

I am apprehensive writing the Blog this morning after all the challenges I’ve had with a new computer. Thank You, John for helping me through this and everyone that responded to his blog letting me know it’s not the Weblog but narrowed it down to the provider that was installedon the computer. My fingers are crossed when I hit the send button.

I’m enjoying the cooler morning of August and the wonderful colors of summer. Red tomatoes, yellow corn, green peppers, new fall crops coming up. I’m taking it all in knowing full well in another month or so the Fall Colors will be drifting in and our Tennessee pallet of beauty will change again.

Be sure to check out all the wonderful items of summer on the market. Many summer vegetables are in peek season and so delicious.

News From Some of Our Growers:

Wedge Oak:
Wild Onion Link Sausage- made with our Mangalitsa pork and fresh wild onion from the farm. Great for breakfast lunch and dinner
Poultry Breakfast- medium breakfast sausage made with pasture raised chicken, turkey, and duck. 1 pound chub
Don’t forget the Bone In Chicken Breast and Leg Quarters too. Great for the grill or to prepare in the kitchen.

Trinity Rose Oberhasli Dairy Goats:
Do you ever have breakfast for supper? I do sometimes. In truth, I don’t enjoy cooking, but I also don’t like to eat out – too expensive and too processed! Sometimes, after a long day, I will scramble up some fresh eggs and top it with crumbled goat cheese and diced fresh (Flying S Farms) tomatoes. It is fast and a GREAT meal. The other night I had my son and his fiancé over for dinner and wanted to make something nice, but simple. I put about ½ cup of goat cheese (Chevre) in a bowl, added some crushed garlic and a splash of lemon juice and mixed it up (it tasted great!) I filled some baby portabella mushroom caps with the mixture and topped with a bit of fresh tomato and baked in the oven (350*) for about 15-20 minutes. DELICIOUS!

Rainbow Hill Farm:
Zucchini, Yellow Squash, Cherry Tomatoes, Okra and Ginger Gold Apples

Flying S Farms:
Silver Queen Corn, Mixed Sweet Bell Peppers and Several Varieties of Tomatoes

Looking forward seeing you on “The Porch” of Quinn’s Mercantile.

It is definitely summer with the rise in temperatures vegetables are beginning to ripen especially the tomatoes. Flat Creek Produce with beautiful Cherry tomatoes, Rainbow Hill Farms with both cherry and larger tomatoes and Flying S Farms with assorted large, cherry and green tomatoes.

All our meat vendors have some great selection of meats; perfect for any gathering, grilling or roasting.

This message from Linda Reed of Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: Please look through the perennials to see all the exciting ways to brighten up your garden! It is not too late to plant, and several types are still in bloom at this time. But you must be sure to keep them (as well as your spring plantings) well watered during this excessive summer heat.
I have been able to find a few new varieties to add to the listings from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse. Some of them include:
Coneflower – not just in pinks anymore! I now have a white one and a nice orange.
Blackberry Lily – not really a lily, but actually a little iris, is a summer charmer
Daylilies – I love the little bicolor orange & red, as well as several with red throats or markings. Unfortunately they are out of bloom now, but their photos give you a good idea of their colors so you can add now and enjoy next summer.
And for your herb garden, I have a few new offerings:
Large basil container – a one gallon pot containing 2 green and 2 purple basil plants, ready to harvest and enjoy this evening!
Elderberry bush – berries may have anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anticancer properties.
I have also made available several of the “old favorites” from last year, such as Greek oregano and various thymes and mints.
Lastly, the “fresh-cuts” are now available in limited quantities. Why buy fresh-cut herbs from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse?
1. All “fresh-cut herbs” are just that – cut the morning of market day, before the weather is too hot, increasing the flavor.
2. I discard the larger stems. Hence you get a lot more usable leaves and tender shoots than you might find elsewhere.
3. My herbs are organically grown, although I do not list them as “organic” because of the expenses involved with the certification process.
4. I never spray my herbs with any pesticide stronger than Insecticidal Soap, and that only very sparingly. You’re not eating chemicals. Hence you should be sure to wash your herbs before use, in case there might be a six-legged hitchhiker in the bag.

Looking forward seeing everyone on “The Porch” at Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday.
