Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: The fall reblooming azaleas just keep on blooming at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse, with 4 colors available now. I’m not really sure what the lower nighttime temperatures this week will do to blooms, but I can tell you that these sweet things are winter hardy, and that fall is the very best time to plant these, as well as perennial plants. Fall planting allows roots to develop and grow strong as they soak up the soil moisture while not having to deal with the beating sun of summer. Strong fall root growth means great winter bud set and fabulous spring blooms. So this fall you might add a few of these beautiful reblooming azaleas to your garden, or you might think about a few perennial plants, to get a jump on your beautiful spring garden.

Pre-ordering is now open for our beautiful Christmas wreaths and kissing balls. We will be able to make only a limited number of each (good help is hard to find!), and when they’re gone, they’re gone. Pre-order price will be in effect till Nov 15, so reserve yours now. We will fill orders as received, beginning about Dec 1. We will also have pink Christmas cacti and several colors of African violets in bloom for Christmas, and you may also reserve those now if you prefer. Just drop me an email to let me know if you want one or more of the potted plants, because they’re not currently available on the market.

Looking forward seeing you on “The Porch” at Quinn’s Mercantile Wednesday.

Welcome September - Market is Open

I am happy to see September, I know it is not technically Fall for several weeks but to me Fall is here. Colors are slowly changing and temperature are falling!

Several ‘fall’ produce are arriving on the market, find winter varieties of squash, second crops of summer squash, cooler season items will soon follow.

www.stonesriver.locallygrown.net

Some news from our Growers:

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: This is the time of year when the perennial garden becomes rather boring, if you don’t take special effort to brighten it up a bit. It’s easy to find bright and cheerful perennials in the spring, in full bloom. But as the summer wears on, and the heat gets on all our nerves, most perennials also lose their enthusiasm and fade into the background. Not so the hardy species begonias, the beautiful blue plumbago, and the creeping rosemary. The first two prefer part to full shade, where they will really liven up the garden in early fall. The creeping rosemary may not be fully hardy in this area but is definitely worth trying if you can locate it in a sunny, well drained, and protected area, such as against the south foundation of your home. All three of these beauties are available in good numbers from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse for the next couple of weeks. Linda

Erdmann Farm: is back this week with red and green okra and Ghost HOT Peppers.

Flying S Farms: Our fall crop of Summer Squash is coming in, Yellow Straight Neck is available this week with Zucchini and Zephyrs to follow next week. Also Big Beef tomatoes are in and Sweet Peppers are beginning to change in color which makes them sweeter! Several varieties of HOT peppers are also coming in.

Looking forward seeing you on “The Porch” of Quinn’s Mercantile.

Market is OPEN, Winter Squash is IN

The Market is OPEN www.stonesriver.locallygrown.net

Good Morning everyone and especially new customers that have recently joined the market. Please spread the news about The Stones River Online Market on your social medium sites and tell your friends, family and neighbors. As a reminder we are still in our “10 Year Anniversary” celebration, this is week 5 or the 10 weeks! When you order each week your name is added to “The Basket” for a chance to win a $25 or $10 Gift Certificates to the market. We drawing we be September 26, you will be notified if you are a ‘winner’.

Several Winter Squash varieties have been added to the market this week. The term winter squash is a bit of a misnomer: Harvested in the fall, these hardy vegetables will keep well through the cold winter months for which they’re named. There are many, vividly colored, flavorful and nutrient-packed winter squash varieties, they are sweeter, denser, and more firm in texture than summer squash or zucchini, autumn and winter squash take well to a wide spectrum of seasonings and can be true crowd-pleasers in warming soups, casseroles, risotto, lasagna, and even desserts.

Many have noticed Double Star Bar Farms has not been on the market for a couple weeks, SAD to report they will no longer be with the market but HAPPY to report they will be starting a new chapter of their lives moving to California. They have been truly a great asset to the market over the past 10 years and will be greatly missed. We wish them the best.

Looking forward seeing you on “The Porch” of Quinn’s Mercantile.
