News from the Growers:

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse: It’s Christmas time in Tennessee! Well, not really, but it is time to put in your order for decorations from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse. This year I will be selling at Wildwood Christmas Tree Farm in Woodbury, but I want to be sure all my local friends receive the items they want before I take any to the farm. So here is how this will work: prepay the total cost now, and reserve a delivery date. Note: it will be easier for me to fill your order on a later date. I promise I will not run out of wreaths and kissing balls, but it’s hard to make as many as are wanted early in the season. They should last about a month if outside, and will be just as beautiful after Christmas as before. Delivery will begin the first Wednesday of December and continue till all orders are filled. Also available this year: beautiful table basket centerpieces and herb plant baskets. Order and pay now, pick up and enjoy in December. Coming in a month or so: Christmas cacti.

The Flour Girl: Several delicious GLUTEN FREE items this week…Cakes, Muffins, Bread, Cupcakes, Cookies and Peach Cobbler.

Fungalicious: As the holiday approaches we find ourselves wondering who would like to have gourmet mushrooms to
pare with their dishes for a wonderful thanksgiving meal. Here at Fungalicious it takes us four weeks
start to finish in order to produce these wonderful delicacies. We would love to make sure that any and
all who wish to have them can so we need to get an idea of what to plan for in the growing cycle. If you
could please send us an email letting us know what you would like and how much it would be greatly
appreciated. This will allow us to plan the harvest for that week. We hope that you and yours are
blessed this holiday season. fungalicious@mail.com

WELCOME 2 NEW GROWERS:

Fungalicious: is a small exotic mushroom farm that grows several varieties but mainly oyster mushrooms offering only the highest quality. We are not a certified organic farm but everything is naturally grown. The only thing that ever comes into contact with our mushrooms is purified water. Even when we harvest, we use food service gloves and place them in paper bags or cardboard boxes depending on the amount and they are ready to use, no washing is necessary. These mushrooms have a delicious mushroom flavor with a great texture. The umami flavor that they add to every dish is incredible! We also sustainably farm using agriculture waste to create substrate material for growing and then compost the spent waste for soil amendment. Oyster mushrooms have been used in the Czech Republic as the main ingredient in a dietary supplement used to treat high cholesterol (Hobbs, 1995). Studies in animals have shown that a diet of Oyster mushrooms reduced the development of plaque in major arteries (Bobek et al., 1995). They also have high protein content, several B vitamins, and all the essential amino acids (Marley, 2009). Its medicinal benefits include promoting anti-tumor activity and lowering high cholesterol. Oyster mushroom fruiting bodies and distillations have been shown to reduce tumor size in several studies on mice, rats, and hamsters (Hobbs, 1995)

Body and Soul Teas: I make small batch herbal tea blends for sipping and soaking. My current product line includes herbal tea blends, bath teas, and herbal steams. My herbs or organically grown purchased and naturally grown herbs or herbs which I have wildcrafted here in Middle TN. Current tea line includes:

Shoo-Flu, a supportive blend containing elderberry for cold/flu season support
Ah-Shoo, a supportive blend containing goldenrod, elder, and peppermint for seasonal allergy support.

News from some of our Growers:

Valentine Family Farm:
Our Valentine Family Farm’s Smoke House Salsa has a delicious smoke flavor because of it’s fire roasted vegetables. Serve it with chips or use it as an ingredient to add some smokiness to your next batch of chili.

Belle Fleur Organics:
Crunchy King Radishes: Gorgeous magenta radishes with a fresh and spicy flavor. Perfect for making pickles, adding to salads, or serving with tacos.
Olympus Bell Pepper: a large and delicious green bell pepper perfect for grilling, sautéing, stuffing. Bright, juicy-crisp, slightly acidic flavor pairs well with a variety of dishes.
Cayenne Peppers; Beautiful, flavorful heat. 2-4 inches in length. Perfect for stringing and drying, adding to chili or stews for some spice, or consuming medicinally.
Jalapenos; Fresh, dark green, and pleasantly spicy without being overwhelming. Great size for Jalapeño poppers (stuffed with duck sausage? We think so!). Also great for drying into chipotle peppers to use as seasoning.
Ping Tung Long Eggplant:
This delicious skinny eggplant is named for its place of origin in Ping Tung, Taiwan. It is truly the eggplant for people who say they don’t enjoy them, as trying them sautéed is enough to change your mind. Superior texture, lack of bitterness, and concentrations of vitamins A, C, and potassium are all great reasons to add this veggie to your stir-fry, pasta, or as a meat substitute for those trying to live a more plant-based existence.
Tusli Basil: Also know as Holy Basil, Tulsi is fragrant and smells slightly of bubble gum, is revered by Ayurveda practitioners, and makes a very relaxing tea. Healing addition to your own tea blends or an exciting salad component!

Rainbow Hill Farm: Delicious Apples this week…….
Jonagold: This apple is a cross of Jonathan and Golden Delicious. A tart flavor with some sweetness.

Dogwood Greenhouse:
The fall beauties are in full bloom, and at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse that means more than chrysanthemums. We still have several species Begonias with their lovely pink blooms. Coincidentally, they pair very well with the tall pink sedums, just reaching full bloom. And what can accent them both better than the beautiful yellow or green creeping sedums? I also have a couple of darker pink tall sedums, which you can see in the photo. Add some of these fall beauties to your garden this year!

Quarter Spring Farm:
Happy chickens taste better. Free range eggs are easy on the belly and the conscience. Pampered goats make better soap. By supporting our farm, you are helping support local agriculture, keeping your dollars local, and acting as an environmental steward. Plus, you will eat well and smell great…and everybody loves that. Dog Treats and our beautiful reusable napkins as well.

Mama D’s Bakery:
Hi everyone! With fall and cooler weather coming on (I hope) we have added a couple fall inspired items. Carmel apple cinnamon rolls and spicy ginger cookies (which are not actually spicy, they just have that good ginger bite. Spicy just sounded better. We hope to add more fall things as the season comes closer, so stay tuned! We also have all our other items available as well. Thanks so much to everyone for continuing to support local businesses!
