Botanical Harmony Farm has plenty of duck eggs this week! Stock up for Easter baking or incredible soft or hard boiled eggs!

Linda from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse sends this cheery Springtime note:

It’s really coming spring at Dogwood Valley Greenhouse! Apparently, once the ball gets rolling, it’s not going to stop. The daffodils are past, and now the early perennials are taking their place. Imagine my surprise to find several blooms in the greenhouse, even though the weather is returning to more “seasonable” temperatures. The market software won’t let me feature all these bloomers, so here is the list for this week (with many more waiting their turn for next week):
Catchfly, Creeping Phlox (one color now, more coming), Primrose, Pulmonaria, and variegated Vinca. Please notice that they are all in very limited supply, which means if you want one of these specifically, you should place your order early. Also I have a decent selection of good strong herb plants, still small but ready to grow for you (Cat Mint, Greek Oregano, Peppermint, Salad Burnet, Chocolate Mint, Orange Mint, and others). Lastly, although not blooming, Lamb’s Ear and Valerian (Garden Heliotrope) are growing like crazy and would love to do so in your garden. Don’t forget our beautiful houseplants (a selection of potted ones and some really nice Wandering Jew hanging baskets). If there is anything specific you’d like for your spring garden, please let me know so I can be on the lookout for you.

So excited for gardening this year! Linda’s plant starts are hardy and always grow beautifully for me!

There will not be delivery ervice this week. We apologize for this inconvenience. Delivery returns next week!

Gracie Martin, MTSU journalism student and Quinn’s Mercantile employee came out last week to interview Tracey and Michael Raines (Frontier Family Farm) for a school project. The focus was on how unique our online market is for our community and we agree! Our market is so special and we appreciate Gracie using us as her subject! Can’t wait to see the interview and hopefully share!

Check out all the excited listings on our incredible market!

Market News

Good morning! Is everyone feeling this early Spring? Our farmers are carefully watching early crop already in the ground or greenhouses. Sprouted seeds are coming up and egg producers are happily laying again!

Botanical Harmony Farm has a few dozen duck eggs listed this week.

So far Sanders Bros. Coffee has offered only light and medium roasts, of which the Honduras Pacavita Organic has been a big hit. But now there is an option for those of you who like a dark roast! The Brazil Cafelandia micro-lot comes from a single farm and will be roasted dark to present a nutty, chocolatey coffee with a subtle red apple sweetness. A rich and complex cup!

If anyone wants to special order beef for Easter dinner, please check out Farrar Farm’s special orders. Quantities will be limited between now and Easter so get your orders in now.

Linda from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse sends this Springtime note:

The first blooms of spring are always a bit tricky to predict. I was watching my daffodil garden, as well as the weather report, and listed the Spring Daffodil Bouquets on the market last week. On Tuesday I had a few dozen flowers, but on Wednesday, it seemed that half the buds opened at once! They may only be available for three weeks because of early hot weather. I’d love for you to enjoy them along with me!

I’m starting to see buds here and there in the greenhouse too. It’s a bit early to set plants in the garden just yet, but these have been in an unheated house all winter, so they’re used to the temperatures. As soon as the weather gets nice enough for the gardener, these early beauties will be ready to go: Dwarf Coreopsis, Creeping Phlox, Pulmonaria, Primrose, and Sweet William (Dianthus barbatus). Most of these will be in bloom in the next two or three weeks. Watch the “Featured Products” at the top of the page to see what’s in bloom this week (but I can only list the five most recent; many of them will stay in bloom for many weeks.)

As a reminder, we appreciate when customers return containers for reuse! Thank you for being conscientious earth dwellers! WE love you!

There’s likely so much more on the market you may not have realized we have! Take a few moments to browse a new category today :)!

See ya on the porch!!

The market is open for this week’s orders!

WELCOME Sanders Bros. Coffee— A local, small-batch roasting company, Sanders Bros. Coffee selects specialty coffee beans (those rated 85 or higher in cuppings) and roasts them fresh just a day or two before coming to market!
Some of the available coffees are certified organic, while others are not simply because the path to certification is too expensive for the farmer. That said, manures and recycled coffee products at the farm level are cheaper than chemical fertilizers, so they are most often used instead.

Check it out and try a bag this week!

Alfresco Pasta has a special this week! ALL raviolis are $1 off! Great items to have on hand for quick, delicious, warm meals!

Farrar Farm is clearing out last year’s inventory and has significantly reduced prices of following items: Bone-in Rump Roast, Flank Steak, Sirloin Steak, Flat Iron Steak, Skirt Steak, Tri Tip. These prices won’t last long so stock up now!!!

Nature’s Wealth offer their Non-GMO, farm-grown popcorn either by the kernel for you to pop or by the popped (and some flavored) bag! Two sizes available! Perfect on-the-go snack that keeps for several days in the Ziploc bag!

Market News

The market is open and ready for your orders!

Thank you all so much for helping us get orders out quickly. We stayed warm and appreciate you for coming out!

In the news:

Erdmann Farm has several Field and Long Island Cheese Pumpkins ready to roast, puree and add to soups, breads and more!

He sent a few great looking recipes to consider:

From Southern Living Cookbook:
Moist Pumpkin Bread

2/3 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
4 eggs
2 cups cooked, mashed pumpkin
2/3 cup water
3 1/3 cups all purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
2/3 cup pecans or walnuts, chopped
2/3 cup raisins

Cream shortening; gradually add sugar, beating well at medium speed of an electric mixer. Add eggs, one at a time, beating after each addition. Stir in pumpkin and water.

Combine flour and next five ingredients; add to creamed mixture, mixing well. Fold in pecans and raisins. Spoon into two greased and floured 9×5×3 inch loaf pans; bake at 350 degrees for one hour or until a wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans 10 minutes; remove from pans, and let cool on wire racks. Yield: 2 loaves.

From Cooking from the farmers’ market:
Roasted Pumpkin Soup with Sage Cream

Makes 6-8 servings

1 sugar pie pumpkin, about 2 lb
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
1 yellow onion, chopped
1 carrot, peeled and chopped
1 celery stalk, chopped
6 inch piece fresh ginger, grated
2 cloves garlic, minced
4 cups (32 fl oz) chicken broth
Salt and freshly ground pepper

Cut the pumpkin into 2 inch chunks. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.
In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add onion, carrot and celery and cook, stirring often, until soft, about 5 minutes. Add the ginger and garlic and cook, stirring, about 1 minute.
Add the pumpkin and broth and bring to a boil over high heat. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover partially, and simmer until tender, about 25 minutes.
Working in batches, puree the soup in a blender. Return to the saucepan and season to taste with salt and pepper. Reheat over medium-low heat.
Ladle into bowls, drizzle the sage cream on top, and serve right away.

Sage Cream
12 sage leaves with stems intact, coarsely chopped
1/2 cup heavy cream
Combine the sage and cream in a small saucepan, Place over medium heat and cook until small bubbles appear along the edges of the pan. Remove from the heat, cover, and let stand for 20 minutes to let the flavors develop.. Strain the sage pieces out of the cream and use right away.

Urban Sprouts offers us some of the most delicious micro-greens around! Choose from Pea, Sunflower or Radish. They have their own unique flavors and add so much to sandwiches, soups, salads and stir fries!

Marcy Jams is back this week with select best-sellers! Check the Jams and Jellies tab to see what she’s brought for us to enjoy on toast, fresh, buttery biscuits or even in a smoothie to add a bit of flavor and sweetness!

The temps may be absolutely brutal but our growers/makers are still hard at work bringing your top-quality products!
Meats, eggs, body care, baked goods and so much more!
