Small Batch and hand made from our pasture raised hogs, this one is delicious for breakfast lunch and dinner.

From Flying S Farms: We have added Cucumbers, Candy Onions and Large Bat like Green Zucchini that can be grated for baking, fritters or stuffed. From Linda at *Dogwood Valley Greenhouse *still has a good supply of tomato plants in two sizes Please place your order soon so you don’t miss out. Please note that prices remain greatly reduced on the 4" square pots. Varieties included are: Better Boy, Early Girl (just a few), Abe Lincoln, Big Red Cherry, and Brandywine. The gallon pots are really beautiful plants, beginning to bloom. And it’s not too late to plant them; simply plant them deep and water well and consistently.

I have restocked several herbs, including some Thymes and Greek Oregano. I also have both green and purple basil, and chamomile, in 4" square pots. And the lemongrass is magnificent! If you’re looking for a specific herb, please ask! I may well have it, as I’ve made a big effort to collect all the herbs available anywhere locally.

Perennials in bloom this week include: astilbe in several colors, balloon flower (both blue and white), a few early coneflowers, coral bells (better known for their beautiful foliage in several colors), dwarf coreopsis (ending bloom cycle), a few early daylilies (mostly pink right now), foamy bells, very early gauras, yellow creeping sedum, Shasta daisies, Stokesia (Stokes aster) in both blue & white, and yarrow in both pink & white.

The ferns are all magnificent, especially Japanese Painted, Northern Lady, Ostrich, Painted, Christmas and Dixie Wood ferns.

We have some new hanging baskets – coleus for shade and petunias for sun, and one large fuchsia basket I think you will love.

Coming soon: fresh cut herbs. Right now my shingles won’t allow me to do the intense bending required to harvest them.

And a little teaser: I potted out about two dozen baby African violets this morning. I’m thinking they will be in bloom around Thanksgiving or Christmas.

Market Is Back Open - Major Announcement This Week

Welcome to June. The Market is back open this morning and I have an announcement to make.

Starting this week Catherine Simmons is the new Market Manager. We are lucky to have her. You may know Catherine and Ben from Flying S Farms and their eggs, produce, baked goods and jams. Catherine has been with the Market since we began and has been one of the Market’s strongest supporters. Catherine has also been promoting farmer’s markets throughout Middle Tennessee for many years. Please give Catherine your support and gratitude as she learns the Market’s operations.

I want to thank Tracey and Ashleigh for their services these past couple of years since I had to step away from the Market. They will continue selling through Botanical Harmony and Homestead Farm. You will probably see Tracey’s sons assisting as needed.

I also want to thank Linda Reed (Dogwood Valley Greenhouse) and Michael Raines (Frontier Family Farm) for helping us through this transition.

I want to thank all our customers for your support as we complete our tenth year of operations.

I hope to see you soon.

John Erdmann

Good Afternoon! The market is open and ready for your orders~.

Botanical Harmony Farm and Homestead Manor Farm is back!

The Krafty Kupboard is stocked up on pantry items that can help make this busy time of year run a bit smoother!

Sweet Pea has some lovely wildflower bouquets!

Altamont Mennonites have 90/10 freezer filler 6 lb hamburger value packs for sale, check it out.

from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse announces a big sale! Tomato plants in 4 inch square pots will be $2, or 3 plants for $5. (The selection for 3 plants is listed separately.) Please leave a message to the farmer telling me which variety(ies) you would prefer. I have Abe Lincoln, Better Boy, Early Girl, and Large Red Cherry. Mix and match for the special, and if you order 6, I’ll throw in an extra one for free. It’s time these good healthy young plants leave my greenhouse and find a good garden to grow in!

Newly in bloom this week: the astilbes are just starting, and oh, how pretty they will be in a shady area of your garden! We have astilbe in four beautiful colors. But you have mostly sunny areas? Then try our Stokesia (Stokes aster), also just beginning to bloom in a lovely lavender blue or in white. We still have a lot of other blooming plants listed in previous messages, but if you are looking for something specific, please ask. I have quite a few things that I haven’t had time to list on the markets as yet.

And, oh yes, there is still plenty of time to plant perennials and annuals. Just please be sure to keep them well watered – “the more sun, the more water” is a good general rule. I water the greenhouses with gentle watering for 20 minutes every day. And one last thing: my plants come with a replacement guarantee for one year from date of purchase. Let me know if you have any issues with a plant you purchased from me.

Thank you all for your patience as we slowly try to get on our feet with the market.

See you soon on the porch!

Michael and Linda

Market News

Good morning!

The market is open and ready for your orders this week! I know that some seasonal markets opened yesterday and that’s great! Two weekly chances to buy local instead of going to a chain that sells from larger corporations. We work hard for you year-round and appreciate the support!

First, home delivery won’t be available for the short-term. I apologize for this inconvenience!

Now, on to the really yummy part of the letter:

The Krafty Kupboard is fully stocked with all of your favorite foods and Cilantro-Lime Black Bean Hummus is BACK! She also has several new items this week..
Taco Seasoning
Sweet Beet Hummus
Spicy Cornbread Mix
Cornmeal Breading
Buckwheat Pancake Mix

Organic, all-natural, wheat and gluten-free available!

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse Dogwood Valley Greenhouse has all sorts of beauties for your mother this Mother’s Day. We have lots of perennials for her sunny or shady garden, but we also know that some mothers don’t enjoy gardening (although we don’t really understand that… lol). Maybe your mom has a nice herb garden that could use a few of our additions, or maybe she’d enjoy snipping a fresh potted herb to enhance her culinary creation. Possibly she’d like to add a couple of groundcovers, ferns, or azaleas in the woodland around her home.

Maybe your mom enjoys houseplants more than garden plants. We have blooming pink “holiday” cacti (AKA Christmas cacti, but in bloom now), and just four very special African violets in full bloom. I have given good reliable instructions in the descriptions to keep both of these in extended bloom, and will always be glad to answer questions via email. I will be glad to wrap the pots of both of these, for a charming Mother’s Day gift.

Surely your mom would enjoy our new Spring Garden Bouquets. These are small bouquets, about a foot from tabletop to tallest bloom, and will be a delightful addition to any spring dining table or end table. I have vases in several colors, so give me an idea of your preference in the comments when you order.

And if you really can’t choose the perfect gift for your mom this Mother’s Day, please consider giving her a gift certificate from Dogwood Valley Greenhouse, so that she can select the plants that will best suit her situation.

One last thing: I’m going to revise my advice about tomato and pepper plants. Our recent nights in the 30’s and low 40’s have kept our garden soil unseasonably cool. The summer vegetables will do much better if you wait to set them out after Mother’s Day. The days are very pretty, but the nights have not been. I have both tomatoes and vegetables available this week, but will be glad to hold plants for you and deliver in a couple weeks. Place your order anytime, and specify a delivery date, to reserve your choice of tomato varieties and green bell peppers.

A huge thank you to Michael Raines of Frontier Family Farms for taking the wheel of the pickup while we work out some kinks! Also, thank you to Linda Reed of Dogwood Valley Greenhouse for staying and keeping Michael straight ;). Much love to both of you!

Flying S Farms has added radishes! YAY!! So happy to have those!

Homestead Manor Farm has several pounds of collard greens available along with fresh-cut thyme and oregano.

Maura at Double Star Bar Farms reminded me of the Boro Art and Craft Festival this coming Saturday (on the square) 8 am to 3 pm! Check it out!!

Botanical Harmony Farm has restocked Eucalyptus Mint Sea Salt and Rosemary, Nettle & Mint Sea Salt Soap bars!

Happy Spring!

Market News

Happy, beautiful Spring day!

Dogwood Valley Greenhouse is just full of blooms at this time of year. Last time I wrote, I was just beginning to see blooms on the Carnations, Coral Bells (better known for their colorful foliage), Foam Flower, Foamy Bells (a cross between coral bells and foam flower), Pincushion, Spiderwort, and Salvia (two colors now). These are all in full bloom now, and really livening up the greenhouses. This week we are adding a few new ones to the sequence of bloom: Beard-tongue, Geranium (cranesbill), Phlox divaricata (another woodland phlox with narrow leaves and a cute dark ‘eye’), and Veronica in two colors.

Several Lavenders, Rosemary (both Creeping and Upright), Garden Sage, several types of Thyme, and Spearmint join the offerings of herb plants this week. It’s taken these guys a while to get going, but they are well worth the wait for your spring and summer cooking. Also added this week are tender Stevia and Lemongrass, which may still need to be guarded against a random unseasonably cool night.

The ferns are looking really good, and we have a good selection of heights and colors for your shade garden – autumn, Japanese painted (short & colorful), painted (taller and light green), Northern lady, and Ostrich at the moment, with more to come.

For spring blooms in shady areas, especially under tall trees, you can’t beat Azaleas. You might want to look through the Azalea listings to see the new colors in this week’s sequence of bloom, and there are still several more to come. And for fall color in full sun, Burning Bush (Euonymous) is amazing. We have both azaleas and burning bushes in two sizes: 1 gallon is about a foot tall, and three gallon is a lot larger and fuller.

Be sure to look for our new Spring Garden Bouquets. I’m having trouble with my phone’s camera, so may not have a photo. But I will be glad to bring you a bouquet and take it away if you aren’t satisfied. These are small bouquets, about a foot from tabletop to tallest bloom, and will be a delightful addition to any spring table.

One last thing: I’m going to revise my advice about tomato and pepper plants. These nights in the 30’s and low 40’s are keeping our garden soil unseasonably cool. The summer vegetables will do much better if you wait to set them out just a little longer. The days are very pretty, but the nights are not. Please wait to get your tomatoes and peppers after Mother’s Day. I will have both available next week, but will be glad to hold plants for you and deliver later. Place your order next week, and specify a delivery date, to reserve your choice of tomato varieties and green bell peppers.

Botanical Harmony Farm still has loads of duck eggs coming in daily! Get them while the ducks are happily laying!

Farrar Farm has nice artisan cuts of beef listed.

Flying S Farms has many of your daily bread needs covered along with award winning jams and chicken eggs. They have listed Bok Choi this week in the vegetable section.

Wedge Oak Farm has sausage, whole chicken, chicken and duck eggs available!

Double Star Bar Farms has the most buttery, must-have Pain l’Ancienne (also known as a mini baguette)… Rod recently shared with me that there is no butter used in the bread, it’s olive oil! These tasty gems are so worthy, right along with their bagels! SO SO GOOD!

There’s so much more on this market. Browse and find some old and new favorites along with ever-changing, seasonal offerings.

Know your farmers, know your makers, bakers, producers! They all appreciate your support and love of what they do :).
